How to Drive a Manual Transmission : 6 Steps Instructables

1. What You Need! 1) A car with a manual transmission!
2. Learning the New Parts of a Manual Transmission. Since you have already learned to drive an automatic, there are only a couple of things in the car that should look new.
3. Starting From a Stop. First, start by pushing the clutch in and moving the gear shifter to first gear. (It is important to remember to push the clutch in all the way before shifting into any gear because failing to do so will make the gears grind which, of course, is not a good thing.)
4. Shifting. Once starting from a stop is mastered, it is time to learn to change gears. To change gears properly, accelerate in first gear until the RPM gauge hits the 3 (3000 RPMs).
5. Stopping. Stopping in a car with a manual transmission is a pretty basic thing to do. It can be done by downshifting through the gears (besides first gear) to use the engine's braking capabilities while using the brakes.
6. Don't Be Discouraged! Driving a manual can be tough at first, and it can get frustrating, but the only way to get better at is to practice. You will get it eventually, and once you get it, your driving will become a lot more fun!

How To Drive a Stick Shift (Manual Car) in 9 Easy Steps

Just Now Driving-tests.org Show details

1. Understand the Different Pedals. Before you begin to drive a stick shift, you need to understand how this type of car differs from cars with automatic transmissions.
2. Understand the Gear Shifter. Before starting the car, take a look at the gear shifter. Most cars with manual transmissions have a gear shifter in the middle of the passenger and driver seats.
3. Start the Car. To start a stick shift, first press the clutch all the way to the floor board with your left foot. Ensure that the gear shifter is in the neutral position then turn the ignition with the key.
4. Push in the Clutch. To prepare to drive the manual vehicle, press the clutch with your left foot and the brake, or the center pedal, with your right foot.
5. Put the Car into First Gear. Next, position the gear shifter so that the transmission is in the first gear. Again, this should be the position furthest to the left and at the top half of the gear box.
6. Let Off the Brake. Remove your right foot from the brake pedal. If you are on a flat surface, which is ideal for your first attempt, the vehicle should move very little.
7. Let Off the Clutch and Push on the Throttle. Slowly begin to place less pressure on the clutch with your left foot. Depending on the vehicle, you may feel it begin to slowly roll forward.
8. Know When to Change Gears. At some point, you will have released the clutch completely and will only be pressing the accelerator with your right foot. You will be driving in first gear.
9. Upshift to Second Gear and Repeat. Take your right foot off of the accelerator while simultaneously activating the clutch with your left foot. Your car will continue to roll.

1. Start on level ground with the car off. Especially if this is your first time driving a car with a manual transmission, start slowly and methodically. Put your seat belt on once you sit down. While learning, it can be useful to roll down the windows. This helps you hear the sound of the engine revving and to shift gears accordingly. The pedal on the left is the clutch, the middle one is the brake, and the accelerator is on the right (remember it, from left to right, as C-B-A). This layout is the same for both left-hand drive and right-hand drive vehicles.
2. Learn what the clutch does. Before you start pushing down on this unfamiliar pedal on the left, take a moment to figure out the basics of its function. The clutch disengages the engine from the wheels. When one or both are spinning, the clutch allows you to switch gears without grinding the teeth of each separate gear. Before you change gears (either to move up or down), the clutch must be depressed (pushed). EXPERT TIP When you're learning to drive a manual car, the most common mistake is that you take the clutch too fast and the car stalls out. Ibrahim Onerli Driving Instructor Ibrahim Onerli is the Partner and Manager of Revolution Driving School, a New York City-based driving school with a mission to make the world a better place by teaching safe driving. Ibrahim trains and manages a team of over 8 driving instructors and specializes in defensive driving and stick shift driving. Ibrahim OnerliDriving Instructor
3. Adjust the seat position so you can access the clutch pedal’s full range of motion. Slide forward enough to allow you to press the clutch pedal (the left pedal, next to the brake pedal) fully to the floor with your left foot.
4. Press the clutch pedal and hold it to the floor. This would also be a good time to take note of how the travel of the clutch pedal differs from that of the brake and gas. It’s also a good opportunity to get used to slowly and steadily releasing the clutch pedal. If you’ve only ever driven automatic cars, it might feel awkward to use your left foot to push a pedal. With practice, you’ll get used to using both feet in concert.

1. Know Your Way Around. To learn to drive manual transmission, changing the gears is the most basic and important step. Most manual transmissions come with 4 or 5 speeds, besides the reverse.
2. Learn The Gears. Before you even step inside the car, you need to learn to shift the gears when the car is not running. Every time you change the stick, push the clutch as well.
3. Starting The Engine. Before starting the engine, put the car on neutral, so that it doesn’t jump suddenly. Most of the cars will not start without pressing the clutch.
4. Using The Clutch. The clutch mechanism lets the gears transit back and forth. If you release the clutch without pulling the gear completely, there will be an unpleasant noise.
5. Upshifting. Upshifting is all about bringing the clutch upward while pressing the gas down. It is the stage when you shift the gears and the car gets pace.
6. Downshifting. What happens when you try to slow down when driving a manual? You downshift. When you learn to drive manual transmission, this is one of the most distinguishable differences from automatic transmissions.
7. Reverse. The reverse gear is quite sensitive, so be careful when using it. To go to reverse, you need to lift collar on the shift lever. Never ever do this while the car is moving.
8. Parking. The emergency brake plays the most important role when parking the car. The reason is no other than, unlike automatic transmission, the absence of a parking gear.
